Unpacking the profit potential: Can a small UK moonshine distillery thrive?

The question of whether a small UK moonshine distillery can actually make money is one we encounter often, especially at markets across the North West. It’s a very fair question. The drinks industry might seem dominated by huge brands, but there's a strong appetite for something different, something craft, and something with a story. For us at AK Distillery, the success comes down to changing perceptions and delivering a premium, flavour-led experience that genuinely surprises people.

When people hear 'moonshine', they often picture something harsh and fiery, thanks to TV stereotypes. This initial assumption is our biggest hurdle, but also our greatest opportunity. The moment a customer sips our Polish-style moonshine and realises it’s smooth, approachable, and full of flavour, their surprise is palpable. This first-sip reaction, the 'I thought it would burn - it didn't' moment, is fundamental to how we build our customer base and, yes, our profitability.

How does a UK moonshine distillery make profit from craft spirits?

For us, profitability isn’t just about selling bottles; it's about building a brand that challenges expectations. We focus on creating smooth, easy-to-sip spirits that appeal to those looking for an alternative to traditional vodka, gin, or whisky. Our flavoured spirits, like Roasted Hazelnut or Pistachio, often introduce people to moonshine who never thought they'd enjoy it. This expansion of the market, bringing in new drinkers, is key.

Attending markets and festivals, from Cheshire to Yorkshire, allows us to meet customers face-to-face. This direct interaction is invaluable. We hear their feedback, answer their questions, and watch those 'aha!' moments unfold. We'll be at Heaton Park Food & Drink Festival in Manchester from August 1-2, giving us another chance to connect directly with people and show them how genuinely delicious Polish moonshine can be, overturning those old stereotypes sip by sip. It's this personal connection that turns a sceptic into a repeat customer, and that's where the sustainable growth comes from.

Beyond sales: building revenue streams for a small craft distillery

Profitability for a small craft spirits producer in the UK extends beyond direct bottle sales. We cater to premium gifting needs, creating bespoke hampers for special occasions. We also see our spirits as perfect for home cocktails, dessert drinks, and sipping neat, encouraging diverse usage. The upcoming AK Distillery venue in Stalybridge will offer another revenue stream, providing a welcoming social space where guests can enjoy our signature cocktails, traditional moonshine, and flavoured spirits, alongside coffee and light snacks. This venue will deepen the customer experience and foster community, which ultimately supports the whole business.

By focusing on quality, authenticity, and a customer experience that prioritises surprise and enjoyment over tired stereotypes, a small moonshine distillery in the UK absolutely can make money. It's about showing people that moonshine is a premium craft spirit that belongs on their shelf, not just in an old tale from across the ocean.
